Baby P sparks training rethink

Sector leaders plan to ramp up training to safeguard children in the wake of the Baby P case, CYP Now has learned.

The Children's Workforce Development Council (CWDC) plans to review its entire social work programme in the light of the serious case review into Baby P's death, which was published last week.

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust has already boosted training for senior doctors in light of the case in Haringey, the same London borough where Victoria Climbie died.

Jane Haywood, chief executive of the CWDC, told CYP Now that the organisation would look at the newly qualified social worker pilot, which started in September, as well as the national occupational standards that underpin the social work degree. "I'm not saying they will change, but we need to look at it," she said. "With our wider partners in the Children's Workforce Network, we need to kick off a debate to make sure safeguarding is absolutely embedded in what we do."
