
The Youth Opportunity Card could be on the verge of being resurrected for young people in London, after the government scrapped plans to roll the scheme out across England in February 2007. The card, a key pillar of the Youth Matters green paper, would have carried credits for teenagers to redeem on sport and cultural activities, but the technology was deemed too costly.
Last week, the London Assembly submitted a proposal to the Mayor for a "regional sports card, along the lines of the Oystercard, which provides free or discounted access for young Londoners to sports facilities across the capital". When young people use a sports facility, they will get credits for other activities such as a trip to the cinema.
