News Insight: Gove's plan to liberate schools

5 mins read Education
Lauren Higgs examines what changes are on the agenda as the coalition government's schools white paper is published.

Accountability

As part of the drive to release schools from centrally imposed targets, the white paper outlines plans to overhaul accountability so that the public has access to more information about the performance of every school.

Data about attainment in specific subjects, trends over time, class sizes and attendance levels will be published in a standardised format.

Performance league tables will set higher expectations and chart pupil progress more than at present.

For secondary schools, a school will be below the minimum "floor target" if fewer than 35 per cent of pupils achieve the five A*-C grade GCSEs including English and maths, and fewer pupils make good progress between Key Stages 2 and 4 than the national average.
