Ofsted's claim that many pupils are misdiagnosed as having SEN will influence this autumn's green paper, reports Lauren Higgs.

So far, the coalition government has revealed few of its plans for children and young people with special educational needs (SEN).

Ministers have made it clear they support parental choice and aim to prevent the closure of special schools, but professionals will have to wait for the SEN green paper this autumn to read about their policies in more detail.

Last week, a damning Ofsted report accused schools of mistakenly labelling thousands of children as having SEN, when all they really need is better teaching and support.

Commenting on the report, children's minister Sarah Teather described the inspectorate's findings as "challenging but familiar", adding that the government has a "consensus" with Ofsted regarding a number of problems within the SEN system.
