Ofsted plans to outsource early years inspections having done this in schools. Ross Watson gauges the sector's response.

"The early years sector is a mixed economy. It is full of private, voluntary and independently run settings, so why shouldn't the infrastructure reflect that?" asks James Hempsall.

Hempsall disputes the notion that outsourced inspectors would work purely for profit and feels the private sector should be respected as a key player. "If we're committed to that idea then all partners should be equally accountable, both in the public and private sector," he says.

In light of Ofsted's claims that its childcare inspectors feel "demotivated and undervalued," he argues additional inspection may suit the ever-evolving sector: "Perhaps the private sector can bring a more flexible and efficient approach."
