1 min read Early Years
Ofsted will decide whether or not to outsource early years inspections in February next year and has shortlisted five suppliers to take on the task.

An Ofsted spokeswoman said: "Ofsted is continuing to discuss thepossible outsourcing of early years work. Five potential contractors areinvolved in discussions: Cambridge Education, CfBT Education Trust,Prospects, Serco Education and Children's Services and TribalGroup."

CYP Now revealed Ofsted's plans to privatise early years inspectionslast year (CYP Now, 4-11 December). But experts have criticised themove, saying it could damage the credibility of inspections anddestabilise the Early Years Foundation Stage.

The shortlisted contractors all have a track record in overseeinginspections or running services for children.

Cambridge Education is already well established among schools, CfBTInspection Services delivers school inspections on behalf of Ofsted inparts of the North West and Yorkshire and Prospects is contracted byOfsted to provide school inspections.
