New school fitness scheme under way

1 min read Education Health
Primary school pupils in Southall, west London, have become the first in the country to take part in a community fitness programme for children, Active In Schools.

The programme is designed by the Fitness Industry Association (FIA), the trade body for the health and fitness sector, which is linking its local health clubs with schools to develop positive attitudes towards physical activity among 10- to 15-year-olds.

Twenty 10- to 11-year-olds from Beaconsfield Primary School spent six weeks in Southall Sports Centre in Ealing, developing skills in multi-sports activities, games and athletics. Schools across the country can now sign up to the initiative, which is designed to help meet recent government targets to tackle child obesity, increase positive activity and get more five- to 16-year-olds doing at least two hours a week of high-quality physical exercise.
