Transforming a Generation is a new programme designed to give young people, aged 18 to 25 and not in education, employment or training, the opportunity to learn fitness skills.
Fred Turok, chief executive of Transforming a Generation, said that the project linked battling the rise in obesity with moves to fight crime in local communities.
"We're the second most obese nation in the world," he said. "There has also been growing community violence, particularly in terms of knife and gun crime involving disaffected young people. I thought there must be a way we can bring those themes together."
The project invites young people to take part in a six-month programme that combines soft skills, such as behaviour and numeracy skills, with capabilities centred around health and fitness, which includes practical training and two work placements.
