Project: Kung fu courses

Funding: £1,900 cost of running two centres paid by Rathbone

Aim: To reduce knife crime in Bolton

Young people in Bolton are learning how to avoid knife attacks as part of an initiative to reduce knife crime.

Prompted by rising levels of knife crime in the Greater Manchester area, charity Rathbone turned to kung fu master Stephen Whiteley to teach trainees techniques to repel a possible knife attack.

The 10-week course combines traditional kung fu with aspects of judo and other mixed martial arts.

Kath Farrant, centre manager for Rathbone, says the increased profile of stabbings has meant that young people are feeling very vulnerable.
