Call to redefine schools as children's centres

Children in Scotland has asked the Scottish Executive to take its reformof the school system a step further by redefining the concept of"school" and introducing "children and young people's centres".

A children and young people's centre would not only provide universaleducation at primary and secondary level, but also encompass full-timepre-school services and out-of-school care for school-age children. Atleast half of each centres' staff would have a graduate or equivalentqualification.

Bronwen Cohen, chief executive of Children in Scotland, called for more"radical thinking" as part of her oral evidence to the ScottishParliament Education Committee's Early Years Inquiry. A full transcriptof the evidence can be downloaded at www.childreninscotland.org.uk.
