Providing high-quality, accessible services for children and their families in small communities where the unit cost may be high is a UK-wide challenge.
A sense of time, a sense of place: meeting the needs of the whole child in small communities, a report published by Children in Scotland on 6 June, looks at some of the approaches being used by remote and rural areas in Scotland to overcome the problem.
It reveals that primary schools are expanding their role to become a "hub" of their communities, offering additional services such as nursery provision, baby clinics, creches, parenting programmes, after-school care and breakfast clubs.
