She was speaking on sustainable play at Play 2005, the annual two-day seminar organised by the Institute of Leisure and Amenity Managers, which took place in Sheffield earlier this month.
"It is clear that public funding, at both national and local level, is essential to sustain play services," she said. "In order to secure that funding, service providers must find clear ways of demonstrating that they are meeting children's needs, through gathering information such as the numbers of those using play services and testimonials from children, parents or carers.
"Play providers also need to ensure that services are well run, both financially and in terms of staff management. This means ensuring that there are people within the sector who have a wide range of skills."
