1 min read
Many children and young people face significant barriers to learning at school, often requiring one-to-one support beyond the capacity of their teacher.

A new book published by NCB examines how support staff in schools, suchas Connexions personal advisors and learning mentors, can help thesepupils make the most of their education.

Author Vanessa Cooper, who is now national co-ordinator of the NCB-basedAnti-Bullying Alliance and has 15 years experience as a personal, socialand health education adviser in various London boroughs, looks at howschools can make the most effective use of support staff and thebarriers these professionals may face. The book includes examples ofgood practice and a checklist for the provision of support services.

Support workers are able to focus on the needs of individuals in amoreinformal setting than the classroom. As one Year 9 pupil put it:"They're not like teachers. You can talk to them like friends. They'remore open, more confidential and relaxed. You can have jokes withthem."
