Slide Away works with groups of schools across local children's service partnerships (LCSPs), initially training a bereavement contact in each school. This teacher or support worker becomes the first point of contact for bereaved pupils, their families and staff, and also provides support around developing the curriculum and policies to deal with anticipated and unexpected deaths. The contacts are also offered ongoing support and training.
School bereavement contacts refer families to Slide Away for a workshop led by trained staff and volunteers. Day one is for parents and carers, while days two and three are for children and involve educational and therapeutic activities, such as making an "emotional first aid kit" and papier mache volcanoes to demonstrate feelings.
