1 min read
A seminar held in London last week explored ways of increasing recognition of bereavement as a key life transition for children and young people and a major issue for mainstream child and family services.

The event, organised by the Childhood Bereavement Network, based at NCB,and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, was chaired by Sir William Utting. It aimed to raise awareness of the prevalence and impact of bereavementin childhood, and to promote a range of services including more trainingand guidance for children's professionals.

Dr Jane Ribbens McCarthy from the Open University presented findingsfrom her literature review, Young People, Bereavement and Loss:Disruptive transitions?

She focused on links with social and economic disadvantage, which canmake bereavement both more likely and more difficult to manage.

"Bereavement can have an impact that reverberates down the years. Thisis particularly true when children and families are alreadydisadvantaged and vulnerable," explained Alison Penny, networkdevelopment officer of the Childhood Bereavement Network.
