The research presents the care experiences of HIV positive young people, the interventions of professionals and the challenges they face. Broadly, a lack of understanding of HIV was identified, leading to very difficult and harmful experiences.
The research found that practitioners feel ill-equipped to deal with the psycho-social issues faced by children with HIV. HIV is not covered as a specific area within sexual health training and they say the primary source of learning they have is the young people themselves.
Young people with HIV want professionals to be a source of information and support, but face discrimination because of misinformation and unnecessary sharing of their status. This effect is worsened when carers hold false beliefs and has led to some placements breaking down.
