NCB Now: Member news - National Academy for Parenting Practitioners

1 min read
Children in foster care have some of the worst outcomes of any group of children with only six per cent going on to higher education, compared with 50 per cent of their peers.

But little is known about why their progress is so poor. New results from a groundbreaking pilot study, carried out by the National Academy for Parenting Practitioners, has started to shed light on the lives of these children and show how they can be improved.

The Study of Adolescents in London has studied more than 100 children to find out how their care history impacts on their emotional development, academic performance and behaviour. The parenting academy is now using the findings to update the Fostering Changes programme, which will be used over the next two years to help foster carers acquire new skills for nurturing children.
