Participation in Our Village, which is published by NCB, points out that children and young people in rural areas face a range of difficulties, including a lack of leisure opportunities, but they are frequently not asked for their views about solving these problems.
The publication looks at a project which followed a group of town and parish councils as they worked to engage young people in developing local plans. It outlines the reasons for encouraging participation and offers case studies on issues such as using questionnaires.
The project found that involving young people in planning services and facilities meant they were more likely to appreciate and use them. It also found that in order for young people to feel really involved they need to believe their views will be respected and acted upon by adults.
