Hosted by NCB and the Child Health Advocacy Network the conference explored different approaches to tackling the current epidemic, highlighting the importance of giving priority to children in the fight against obesity.
The conference was chaired by Sarah Stewart-Brown, professor of public health, University of Warwick and co-chair of the network, and by Professor Philip Graham, former NCB vice president.
Delegates heard from Professor Pekka Puska, director general, National Public Health Institute, Helsinki, who gave an encouraging presentation about how projects in Finland have succeeded in promoting healthy lifestyles and preventing chronic diseases.
Professor Graham led a session entitled "Nanny State or Responsible Government?", which looked at the different approaches to adult and children's health taken by the Government in the white paper as well as the position of adults as role models for children and young people.
