NCB Now Comment: We must tackle violence in the homes of children

A number of high-profile assaults and killings over recent years have shone the spotlight once more on the effect of violence on children and young people, as both victims and perpetrators.

While these cases attract high levels of media and public attention, we must not lose sight of far more common, insidious violence that so many children and young people witness and experience every day, behind closed doors.

Domestic violence sadly occurs far too often in England. It accounts for 14 per cent of all recorded violent incidents, although its prevalence may in fact be much greater as police estimate that only 35 per cent of incidents are actually reported. While the primary victims of domestic violence tend to be women, men are also affected, and children living in households where domestic violence takes place are at enormous risk of physical and emotional harm. In England alone, it is estimated that 200,000 children live in a household where there is a known risk of violence.
