Policy & Practice: Addressing the trauma of domestic violence

1 min read
We have long been aware of the enormous human costs of domestic violence. But recent figures claiming domestic violence is costing the UK a startling 23bn a year show how the trauma of domestic violence is becoming a considerable financial burden for individuals and society as well.

Sadly, violence and the fear of violence is an everyday reality for far too many families, and children are often among the silent victims. Statistics have suggested that 90 per cent of domestic violence takes place when children are in the same or next room and, in over 50 per cent of known domestic violence cases, children are directly abused, as well as the partner.

With such a complex issue, it's imperative that communities adapt their services to the sensitivities of local families' needs. Many neighbourhood Sure Start programmes have been doing just that - working in close partnership with agencies and making dramatic progress working with families at risk of domestic violence.
