Plaid Cymru parliamentary leader Elfyn Llwyd MP plans to present a Ten Minute Rule Bill in the House of Commons that, if passed, would criminalise all aspects of domestic violence. Domestic violence is shockingly prevalent in the UK: two women a week die at the hands of a violent partner.
Are all acts of domestic violence criminalised?
Domestic violence is not comprehensively criminalised in the UK. Separate, specific acts connected to domestic violence are criminalised, including physical acts like assault, and there are also laws against stalking and harassment. However, this leaves some aspects of domestic violence outside of the law, including some acts of controlling behaviour. Coercive control has, until now, only been recognised in laws against stalking, which is limited.
