Rather than adopting one methodology, what schools really need is a repertoire of strategies on which they can draw to deal with bullying. That is why the Anti-Bullying Alliance seeks to bring together expertise from across the spectrum, to provide a diverse pool of knowledge and ideas. By finding out from experience what works for them and what doesn't, schools can develop the techniques which suit their community and can use them with confidence.
Schools also need preventive strategies which help to create a safer and more tolerant environment. Even those adults who were not bullied as children often remember experiencing the fear that they might be. Like bullying itself, this fear can blight children's lives. It can lead to them feeling insecure and unhappy. It can also mean that they become passive onlookers, too afraid to intervene. At worst, children may turn into bullies themselves, a kind of pre-emptive strike, in case they become the next victims.
