Every Child Matters applies to young people from 0-19, but young people of this age do not see themselves as children and have specific needs for support.
Starting college can be daunting - new timetables, places, people and friendships; a stressful combination. Most young people start having sex aged 16 and above and 80 per cent of teenage conceptions under the age of 18 are to young women aged 16 and 17. About half of these conceptions end in abortion, suggesting that they were not intended and there is also the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
At this time of transition, sex and relationships education has a new relevance and urgency. College inductions and tutorials are great opportunities to tell young people about local services, suggest useful websites and show that sexual health is something we can all openly talk about.
