But some areas still have a long way to go while others are makingenormous progress. For example, rates in the London boroughs ofHammersmith and Fulham and Westminster are down 47 per cent since 1998,and are close to achieving the Government target of a 50 per centreduction by 2010.
However, national figures show a slight rise in under-16 conceptions,from 7.5 per thousand girls in 2004 to 7.8 in 2005. More than 7,400under-16s became pregnant in 2005, with 57 per cent of these conceptionsending in abortion. The reasons for this rise are not clear, but we knowmany young people are still not receiving their entitlement togood-quality sex and relationships education or access to confidential,young people-friendly sexual health services.
