All adults have a responsibility to help young people use information and communication technology safely and positively - but keeping up with their knowledge of social networking, blogging and instant messaging can be daunting. Parents worry about bullying and many are unsure of how to best support their child if they become a victim of cyberbullying, or if they become involved in cyberbullying others.
The "Stay safe in cyberspace" theme for Anti-Bullying Week 2009 gives ABA an opportunity to remind us all that there are simple but effective steps to keep children safe. Finding out which websites they visit and helping them find the "report abuse" or "block sender" options will reassure parents, and help children feel in control. Parents should encourage children to act thoughtfully, and explain that content and photos can stay online forever.
