However, progress has now stalled and many children will continue to have their lives blighted by poverty unless the government invests £3bn in the forthcoming budget to halve child poverty by 2010. Without this money, the government will fall short of its target, and 700,000 children will remain in poverty. The figures do not matter to children. What does matter is not being able to afford school uniforms or school trips. These are the things that mark them out as different and often set them on a downward spiral of social exclusion.
The Campaign to End Child Poverty, of which NCB is a founding member, believes children deserve better. That is why, ahead of April's budget, we are stepping up pressure on the government to keep its promise.
