Participants discuss burning issues and the same comments keep popping up - for example, whether NVQ-level training is adequate, difficulties attracting the right staff, frustrations about Ofsted, and residential child care being seen as the last option.
The events also include themed discussions, which are currently focusing on issues such as access to mental health services. Some organisations have their own therapists who meet children and staff while others look externally.
Workers who attended the events in 2008 thought direct referral to child and adolescent mental health services was helpful and wanted these services to be more flexible so all looked-after children have access to therapeutic support, either in a formal way or through drop-in services. Workers also felt there should be a greater focus on family support and early intervention.
