NCB Now: CDC outlines plans for its future work

The Council for Disabled Children has published its first annual review, highlighting its achievements over the last year as well as providing a preview of future plans.

The council, based at NCB, has enjoyed a number of recent successes ininfluencing national policy and practice. Notable results include agovernment agreement that the specific duties on disability outlined inthe Disability Discrimination Bill would apply to schools.

The council has also developed a close working relationship with thechildren's commissioner for England, Al Aynsley-Green, who has chosendisability as one of the four key topics for his first year inoffice.

The council is now keen to develop its ability to accurately reflect theviews of disabled children, and plans to seek funding for aparticipation worker. Future activity also includes developing projectson children's centres and extended schools, looking at how they includedisabled young people.

"The next year will be particularly important," said Christine Lenehan,director of the council.

"We are looking forward to some key developments with the formation ofthe Office for Disability Issues and the implementation of bothImproving the Life Chances of Disabled People and the national serviceframework."
