National Youth Agency: Positive streets

There's still time to get to Wigan for the Federation for Detached Youth Work conference, which takes place later this week. The title of the conference is Positive About the Street. Kevin Jones, chair of the federation, said: "The street, and people's behaviour within it, has always been the subject of controversy, but never more so than now. For some it's a place of antisocial behaviour and crime, a place to be feared. For others, it's a playground, a place of freedom, creativity, culture and commerce, even a home. Yet others use it as a meeting space, a site for discussion and protest. How should these activities be valued? As detached workers how should we work within it?"

Speakers at the event include Tony Jeffs from Durham University and Youth & Policy, Tom Wylie, former chief executive of the National Youth Agency and author and consultant Vanessa Rogers, who will run a session focusing on positive activities for the streets.

Further information is available from the federation's website at www.detachedyouthwork.info.
