My Week - My staycation location is the local B&Q

MONDAY - Half my team is on holiday so the place is quiet. But outside this little oasis of peace everyone else continues to inundate us with emails, including invitations to the next raft of conferences. Despite this apparent busyness, there's a sense of fatigue about. In these troubled times, we need to keep a tight rein on expenditure, but we also need to look for opportunities, such as developing new ways of commissioning services.

TUESDAY - Today, Ofsted arrives. With it comes the usual frisson of anxiety, especially as it seems to be the case now that we need to get a "good" or "outstanding" outcome. There are rumbles that only settings with good or outstanding will be able to access new early years pilots. Where does that leave those settings that achieve only satisfactory outcomes? Can a snapshot visit once every few years really be a reliable indicator of quality?

WEDNESDAY - Today we are planning our annual programme for apprentices. It's a tricky business working with the Learning and Skills Council, which will disappear next spring and, with it, all the money. Recruiting apprentices might be easier now, given the growing number of unemployed young people, which also includes graduates.
