My Life: Jade Mock, 16, south Wales

1 min read
It started with my mum talking about a group of volunteers taking a trip to Uganda for a month to help abandoned children. When I saw pictures of the children in the orphanage it touched my heart and I wanted to go. I raised money for my flight by doing sponsored walks.

When I went to Uganda I stayed in the orphanage with the children. It was demanding and the conditions were poor. There was a cold shower and a pit latrine and we took our own food. I was told what to expect but it only hit me when I got there. There was so much poverty.

When I first went to the children's site they sang and danced, welcoming us to their country and home. I don't think I've ever felt so special.

Almost immediately I felt as if I belonged.

It wasn't long before I grew attached to the children. I taught English to a class of three children and in the afternoon I took them swimming.
