My Life: Ben Kenyon, 15, Lichfield

Words cannot describe how proud I was to carry the Olympic torch through Lichfield this summer. I was chosen because of all the work I have done with the National Autistic Society (NAS) to raise awareness of autistic people's needs.

I joined the NAS Young Campaigners group in 2010 after taking part in a Channel 4 documentary called Young, Autistic and Stagestruck. During the first year we campaigned for better services for autistic people with mental health issues. We made a short film called You Need to Know and we held an event at the Houses of Parliament to show the film to MPs. Last year we began campaigning for more autistic-friendly schooling and education. I met Sarah Teather, former children’s minister and I’ve even had tea with a Lord.

This year is NAS’s 50th birthday and it has held special events in special places. I went to 10 Downing Street to meet Samantha Cameron. My best memory is meeting the Countess of Wessex at St. James’s Palace and cutting a huge birthday cake with her.

I have really enjoyed working with the NAS and I am now a young ambassador. I went to the Labour Party Conference this month to grill Anne McGuire, shadow minister for disabled people. She answered all my questions and also asked me some.

I am looking forward to meeting more influential people and raising more awareness of autism in the future.
