Researchers employed by the Youth Empowerment Scheme have been visiting mosques and community organisations across the country to gather information on what Islamic teachings say about the themes underpinning the National Occupational Standards for youth work.
They define these themes as participation, equality, action taking, communication, empowerment and education. The themes form the acronym "peace", which they identify as the meaning of Islam.
The researchers will complete their fieldwork in November, before working with the organisation to produce a booklet to help people understand youth work using Islamic terminology.
The initiative has been developed by Anam Hoque, youth adviser to the Youth Empowerment Scheme, who is also the youth work training co-ordinator at Tower Hamlets College.
