Motorcycling: Licence to thrill

Young people's fascination with motorcycles can put them on a collision course with local residents and the police. John Newman finds out how youth projects are stepping in to help out.

The aim was to contact and engage with the "culprits" and try to get them to change their behaviour.

At the other end of the country, the London Borough of Bexley has a history of antisocial motorcycle activity, theft and illegal riding. Here too, six officers and a member of the youth offending team have been equipped with off-road motorcycles.

Funding comes from the Home Office Reassurance Project, which works with communities where certain crimes have a disproportionate impact on public feelings of safety. As with the Bradford scheme, one of the main housing associations in the area and the local council are involved in the project.
