Motor projects: Biker girls

While many young women have spent the school holidays hanging out with friends, 14-year-old Christine has been knee-deep in mud, covered in grease.

It might sound like an unusual way to while away a holiday, but Christine couldn't be happier. The self-confessed petrol head from Didcot, Oxfordshire, has been taking part in Trax, a project for young people interested in learning how to ride and maintain motorbikes.

This year is the first time the project has worked specifically with young women. Tamsin Jones, the project worker, says: "The motorcycle project started about two years ago and we have had a few young women join the course. But it became apparent that we would need would need to set up a girls-only group if we wanted to attract more."
