Montessoris back Tory plans

Montessori providers have backed the Conservatives' "free school" model, citing its potential to widen Montessori education to families unable to afford fees.

Under a Tory government, local education providers, organisations and communities will be given power to run state schools.

Lincolnshire Montessori development manager Nathan Archer said: "For Montessori providers it could mean widespread delivery without the current burden of fees."

Last week a group of parents from Brighton launched a campaign for a state-funded Montessori school.

Brighton & Hove Montessori School head teacher Daisy Cockburn said a strategy that gave them power to deliver state-funded Montessori would be welcome. "In the past our local authority has been obstructive in enabling us to secure state-funding," she said.
