Mixing young and old helps results

Education
Activities where young and old people mix in school can boost academic results, a report by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NfER) has concluded.

The report, published yesterday (6 May), reviewed studies of such projects to identify the benefits for those who took part and which approaches worked best.

As well as better results, the report said young people's social skills and self-esteem improved. These projects also reduced feelings of isolation among adults and helped to improve community cohesion.

Intergenerational practice: a review of the literature argued old and young people are "increasingly disconnected" from each other, and projects bringing them together could help to overcome this.

The NfER found several elements were vital for successful projects: a long-term approach; appropriately trained and skilled staff; and activities suitable for all ages.
