Ministers ignoring disability bullying

Education
The bullying of disabled children is being sidelined by the government, according to a report published by Mencap earlier this week.

The disability charity's report, Don't Stick it Stop it! Bullying Wrecks Lives, says the bullying of disabled people is destroying children's lives leading to social exclusion in childhood and adulthood.

It reveals that eight out of 10 children with a learning disability are bullied, while six out of 10 have been physically hurt.

Mencap is calling on the government to take the bullying of children with a learning disability as seriously as other forms of bullying and has recommended schools and children's services record all incidences of this type of bullying of disabled young.

Jo Williams, Mencap's chief executive, said that despite government recognition of the impact of bullying, there has been no clear leadership in combating the bullying of disabled children and young people.
