NCB Now: Member news - Mencap Children's Charter: We Want to Be Safe

To mark the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, Mencap has launched a new children and young people's charter poster with key messages on how children want professionals to help keep them safe.

Children with a learning disability want adults to take action when they are unsafe. They want staff to understand their disability and to listen to them when they are being bullied or hurt, however they communicate this.

Children with a learning disability are twice as likely to be bullied as other children, and they are three times more likely to be abused.

Lesley Campbell, Mencap's national children's officer, said: "Children with a learning disability are being denied their fundamental right to feel safe. We want all staff who work with children to take the necessary steps to ensure that disabled children feel safe wherever they are."
