NCB Now: Protect and promote children's right to play

Children's play, protected under Article 31 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, is higher on the agenda than ever before and has seen a major surge in support in the past 20 years.

For the first time, we have a 10-year national play strategy for England and statutory guidance to children's trusts that requires "a strategic approach to play across the local area, with the full involvement of children, local communities and the third sector in decision-making".

The Northern Ireland Executive recently published its first ever Play and Leisure Policy, which sets out a commitment to children and young people's play and their right to engage in leisure activities. In August 2009, the Scottish Government committed to a policy framework for play in its Health, Anti-Poverty and the Early Years Framework. The Welsh Assembly Government is processing a measure that will place a statutory duty on local authorities to provide for children's play.
