1 min read
Pupils in Greenwich and Lewisham are set to benefit from mentoring by expert architects and builders as part of a scheme to teach them about the built environment, established in memory of local schoolboy Stephen Lawrence.

Stephen, who was murdered in 1993, had dreamed of becoming anarchitect.

The scheme has been developed by the Stephen Lawrence CharitableTrust.

World-class architecture practices and consultancies like FosterArchitects and Arup have pledged their support, which will take the formof informal school visits, talks, and help with curriculum-relatedprojects.

The trust is looking for a schools development manager to start nextJanuary when work on its new Deptford-based 3.5m centre is due tobegin.

Pupils will track the progress of the building, as part of theproject.

"Our main aim is to get teachers, pupils and their families tounderstand what is involved in working in the built environment and whatdifferent kinds of jobs there are," said trust chief executive KarinWoodley.
