Mentoring: Ex-offenders to mentor young people in Prince's Trust pilot

The project will look at the problems of using offenders to work with young people who have also offended, and assess the value of the approach.

Peter Lister, head of special projects at the trust, said: "We want to explore ex-offenders being mentors. We will be looking at things like getting Criminal Records Bureau checks, and giving these people the skills to be effective mentors."

The idea came from young offenders who took part in a seminar with the Prince of Wales and the Home Secretary, John Reid, in December. One of the key findings from the event was that having support from someone who had been through the same experiences could be especially valuable to a young offender.
