A pilot project was launched last week to set up a network of ex-offenders to act as advisers to the 42 local probation boards in England and Wales.
Mark Johnson was the first ex-offender to be appointed and will advise the board of Dorset Probation. Johnson was supported into business by The Prince's Trust after overcoming drug addiction and homelessness seven years ago.
"The idea is the adviser will have more experience and knowledge of whether ideas will actually work," Johnson said. "I will be a link between the board and the shop floor. There needed to be a voice because offenders weren't being heard."
