The Family Minded report, published today (11 June), calls for age-appropriate information for children to help them cope with a parent's mental illness. It also calls for child-friendly facilities in hospitals where parents are treated.
According to the report, a named lead professional should be allocated to each family to act as a main point of contact and strategic commissioning should ensure children's and adult services work together.
Alison Webster, policy and research lead on mental health at Barnardo's, said: "Children rely on their parents for support, but when parents are affected by mental illness their role can become a struggle. Our proposals would mean the whole family would get more of the support they need during what can be a very difficult time."
