Funding dismay for mental health

1 min read Health
A family therapy charity has expressed alarm after the government confirmed that it would cut funding for qualified professionals who want to take mental health training courses.

The Association for Family Therapy and Systemic Practice (AFT) said the government's confirmation of the funding cut "beggars belief" and would mean highly qualified professionals, such as doctors, would be deterred from training as mental health professionals.

In a response to a report by MPs on the Innovation, Universities and Skills Select Committee, the government last week said it would press ahead with plans to phase out funding for universities to subsidise the fees of students studying for a qualification at the same, or lower level, as one they already hold.

The government originally announced last September that it would cut funding to subsidise equivalent or lower-level qualifications (ELQ) students by £100m a year by 2010/11.
