Scotland praised for mental health investment

1 min read Health
A leading mental health charity has called on England to follow Scotland's lead after the Scottish Government announced a 4m investment in mental health provision for young people.

This week the Scottish Government announced a two-year £2m a year investment in support services for children and young people with severe mental health problems. It will be matched by money from NHS Boards.

A spokeswoman for young people's mental health charity Young Minds praised the announcement and said that England should follow suit.

She said: "What the Scottish Government has done is hugely important and investment like this is something we very much want England to follow. It is especially important when we are in a recession. Investing now saves further crises and costs in the future."

The Scottish funding will pay for community-based support for under-18s affected by conditions such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia as well as severe depression and eating disorders.

Those requiring 24-hour specialist care will have access to a new young person's inpatient unit in Glasgow that will have a school, gym and family area.
