Mental Health: Units are forced to delay discharges

Mental health units are being forced to delay the discharge of young people with complex problems for months because social services are failing to find them suitable placements, researchers have warned.

This was the reason for the delayed discharge of the majority of 19 children from an in-patient mental health unit for children and young people at Parkview Hospital in Birmingham, according to a study presented at the Royal College of Psychiatrists' annual meeting this week.

Dr Shivani Aggarwal, a senior house officer at the hospital, said the delays meant children's health deteriorated further.
