Mental health: Birmingham denies children put at risk

Birmingham Children's Hospital has denied claims the proposed closure of a children's ward will put young inpatients with mental health problems at risk.

Under the proposal services will be moved to a young people's unit sixmiles away at the Parkview Clinic. However psychiatrists have raisedconcerns that the clinic, which caters for 12- to 16-year-olds, will notbe able to provide appropriate care for the under-11s in the ward.

Susanna McCorry-Rice, joint director of Birmingham Child and AdolescentMental Health Service, said plans to increase nursing staff and usespare bed capacity were being considered to ensure bed spaces weremaintained.

She added the hospital was considering sending younger children on a12-mile round trip each day to the school at the hospital, though afull-time teacher might be provided if there were at least sixpupils.
