Mental Health: Bedford schemes fight youth suicide

A showcase of the projects earlier this week marked the close of Bedfordshire Breakout, a 75,000 scheme developed to fight depression by Bedfordshire Heartlands and Bedford primary care trusts, Connexions, Bedfordshire Youth Service and Bedfordshire Drug and Alcohol Action Team.

The pilot scheme involved a training programme for representatives of 30 statutory and voluntary organisations, which led to them designing projects to prevent suicide among young men, helped by start-up grants of 500.

The county is one of three areas funded by the National Institute of Mental Health in England, which will now evaluate the new schemes.
